About Me

Meet the Owner

Hi, I'm Rita Chapman.

I grew up in Mentone, AL and absolutely love it!  This is where my roots lie, and having grown up the daughter of hunting dog trainers and breeders, Scutter and Betty Smith, my passion for dogs is also deeply rooted.  After retiring from my job at the Fort Payne School System after 25 years, I am finally able to follow my dream of opening a different kind of dog business. This dream has, thankfully, been supported by my awesome husband, Whitney, and the rest of my family.  I will also be raising AKC purebred Miniature Schnauzers as a hobby breeder and having one or two litters per year. I can't wait!!

My goal is to offer a different type of doggy daycare and boarding experience to folks like me who treat our small dogs.... well, like family...because they are! Small dogs can have big personalities, can be somewhat timid, can be very sensitive, can have special food needs or medication needs.  And most small dogs feel a frequent need to be in someone's lap.  I am ready and willing to accommodate all those needs.

My commitment to the safety and security of all dogs guides every decision I make for my Mentone Minis and your dogs as well!

(Pictured below is my father Scutter Smith and his beloved sidekick, Smurf.)

About Mentone Minis

Passionate About Your Pets

Accepting Small Dogs only - 25 pounds or less

My climate controlled kennel is steps from our home.  Most of my time will be spent in the kennel or one of the fenced play/exercise/potty areas with my guests.  While staying at Mentone Minis your doggy will get lots of attention from me seeing to their needs as well as kisses and loving, belly rubs and game playing.  Feel free to bring toys or blankets from home if you wish but I'll have plenty of freshly laundered beds, blankets and toys available.  Having Miniature Schnauzers of my own, I'll slowly introduce socialization skills and will work on basic obedience skills as well.

My kennel will be colorful and offer lots of entertainment for the dogs.

Mentone Minis will be stringent with these requirements:

A full enrollment questionnaire must be filled out at our first meeting.  This can be emailed to you in advance if requested.

ALL dogs must be up to date on vaccinations protecting against Rabies, Distemper, Parvo and Boardatella (Kennel Cough).  Please bring a copy of your dog's vaccination records with a contact number for your vet.

If you and your vet choose to titer test, this documentation will be acceptable.

All dogs must have Flea protection and be free of ticks and fleas.

All dogs must be healthy, no dogs appearing to be sick will be admitted.  This includes but is not limited to coughing, watery eyes, vomiting and diarrhea. If your dog has been ill within the last 30 days please discuss this with me so we can determine a safety protocol.

A female dog "in season" cannot be boarded at that time.

Aggressive dogs or biters will not be accepted.  We can have a meet and greet to try.

Boarding Registration Form

Mentone Minis Registration Form

This form must be printed, completed and brought for each dog you want to enroll in PlayCare or for OverNight Stays.  This must be accompanied by a Veterinarian's Record showing your dog to be up to date on all shots, including Kennel Cough or Bordatella Vaccine.  A fecal floatation showing your dog to be worm free should be on the vet record as well.

This is for the protection of Your Dogs, My Dogs, and Any Other Dogs who visit Mentone Minis.

No exceptions will be made to this requirement.

If you have any questions, first read the Registration Form then contact me.

Why Immunizations Matter

  • Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus (DHPP). Commonly called the “distemper shot,” this combination vaccine actually protects against the four diseases in its full name.

  • Rabies virus is fatal and all mammals, including humans, are susceptible to infection. Rabies vaccinations for dogs are required by law in most states.

  • Bordetella (commonly called “kennel cough”).  The bordetella virus causes an extremely contagious upper respiratory infection. Your veterinarian may recommend this vaccine before your dog goes to a dog park, groomer, boarding kennel, doggie daycare or dog show.

Mentone Minis Schnauzers

Producing Healthy AKC Miniature Schnauzers

Why Miniature Schnauzers?
They are sweet, smart, loving and loyal dogs. They are a hardy and healthy breed that are considered practically hypo-allergenic as they do not shed.  This means they require regular trips to the beauty shop, I mean trips to the groomer😉.  Their signature eyebrows and beards give them a very distinct look when properly maintained.  We do not crop the ears as we enjoy the natural ear look (and cropping ears is very painful and takes weeks to heal).
They need to live indoors and can be taught to potty outdoors or inside on potty pads, our minis do both.  Originally bred to be ratters and companions, these dogs are easily trained and many participate in agility events. Their alertness and vocal nature makes them an excellent watch/alert dog.  Miniature Schnauzers enjoy companionship and are quite entertaining!  They are fast, smart, sensitive, and above all need to have a person or family to bond closely and snuggle with.
Miniature Schnauzers live long and healthy lives when fed a high quality, vet recommended diet, and are provided proper medical attention, exercise and immunizations.
We give our mins NuVet Plus supplements and, as we ae a NuVet distributor, your puppy will be given a sample and our recommendation to continue this as an Immune Support, Antioxidant, with Vitamins and Minerals.
We've been Miniature Schnauzer owners for 12 years now and want to be able to produce and share the joy of bringing these precious and lovable pets into your family.  We have Jay Walter - 12 years old, Charlotte - 10 years old and Maggie - 2 years old in our home.
